Grandma’s Marathon 2013: The Aftermath

Happy Happy Tuesday everyone! I’ve got some great news to report….my quads aren’t screaming anymore!!! I’ll catch you up on what I did Saturday night, Sunday, and my active recovery, and then I’ll be back to regular programming on the blog (if anyone has a great salad recipe that won’t make me hungry 2 hours later, please share!!)

All Saturday afternoon/evening I was very warm. I thought I might have a low-grade fever, but my stomach felt fine, and I wasn’t having chills. I was just warm, and it felt weird!

Once I grabbed some post-race pizza, I headed back to the hotel. One more shout-out to the Sheraton Duluth, it was the perfect location for race day. It was a short walk to everything! And the bonus of not staying in Canal Park, is that after the race there wasn’t a long wait time anywhere on Superior Street. I’m sure the Canal Park restaurants were always busy.

Anyways, I put my feet up and had some girl talk with my friend Alex, it was so great to be able to have an extended conversation, instead of our usual phone dates. We decided to go next door to Black Water which is one of my favorite bars in Duluth. I got the June in January martini (vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, sour, plus dry ice!) and Alex got a spicy margarita martini, which tasted sweet, but had a spicy finish. A little while later my friend Mara joined us, and we all headed down to the tents in Canal Park.

I had heard that the party in tents was awesome and a ton of fun. We first walked past the “official tent” and realized it was an $8 cover. I had 2 free beer tickets, but it wasn’t worth 2 free beers if it cost us $24 to get in! There was another tent that was $5 so we headed over there, and each got a beer. It was cold and damp outside, and there were a ton of smokers, plus the band that was playing was not my style. We debated going into Grandma’s Sports Garden because we knew we would like the music…but decided it wasn’t worth it, since we knew the line around the block wasn’t our style. (If they had offered immediate entry for marathon finishers that would have been awesome!)

Around 10:30 we decided to head back up to the hotel. Which was just fine with me! Sunday morning Alex had to leave kind of early (7:00 am) but I wasn’t in the mood to fall back asleep. Instead I slowly got my stuff together, and read through what I missed on Social Media. Around 10 am I moved my bags out to my car and after some debate decided to walk to Duluth Running Company to check out their sale.

Duluth was still foggy and cold. So I wore a maxi dress, a zipup sweatshirt, and my compression socks with converse sneakers. I wore those compression socks from Saturday afternoon until Sunday afternoon, including sleeping. I’m not sure how much it helped, but it made me feel like I was at least doing something positive. The arches of my feet also were really sore, and still are a little tender, I’m wondering if I should have some arch support in my running shoes, or if that is just the normal amount of pain from completing a marathon?

After doing some window shopping and seriously struggling whenever I was approached with a set of stairs, I decided it was time to head back towards home. I made a quick stop at Whole Foods Co-op to see if they had some CheriBundi, as I’ve heard its a great recovery drink.

And once I got into Aitkin I realized it was summer everywhere except Duluth. 80 degrees and very warm! I got home really wanting to go straight to bed, but it was still early, so I texted my friend Ellie and joined her on a walk! (2.8 miles in 50 some minutes). My dad grilled some burgers to dinner, and I tried to go to bed early, but couldn’t seem to fall asleep.

Monday morning my alarm went off at 5:20 and I struggled to stand up and get ready to go teach Yoga Sculpt. I wasn’t sure what I would be able to do, but knew I had to do it. When I got to the studio I saw that only a few students were signed up, but thankfully I had a few walk-ins and survived class! I didn’t do lunges, but I was able to do some squats.

I moved slowly through work and was very tired in the afternoon, so instead of working late as I had planned, I left at a normal hour and layed down for a bit. My mom and I were on our own for dinner, so we decided to get a walk in, which was a little over 4 miles, and I was in bed by 8:45, although not asleep until about 10:00.

Today I woke up and am happy to say I’m almost like new! I’m not sure what kind of workout I’ll get today. Maybe another walk, since I teach sculpt on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday I’m teaching a private class, and Friday is a rehearsal dinner for a dear friend (I’m one of the personal attendants) and then Saturday she’ll get married and we will all celebrate!

What do you usually do post-race?



  1. Post-race I tend to eat a lot (as soon as my stomach is up for it) get a massage, wear compression sleeves and do some legs up the wall!

    I eat a lot of salads for lunch and some toppings that help keep me full for a long time include: hard boiled eggs, walnuts, sweet potato, chicken, black beans, avocado, etc.

  2. Post marathon I’m usually riding a runners high! Its two days later that it hits my body. I try to limit my eating crazy to one day then get things back to normal. I don’t know how you taught that yoga class.

    1. We skipped lunges, but it actually felt good to move my legs a little. Also, the walk on Sunday really helped! I had no idea I would be so hungry, but I slowed down on eating after breakfast Sunday morning.
